Fire Island Light was completed in 1858 on the site of an earlier light built in 1826. It has a focal plane 168 feet above sea level, is visible for 20 miles at sea and is often the first sighting of land for New York bound ships.

The U. S. Coast Guard decommissioned the Fire Island Light in 1974 and the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society has since raised over a million dollars to restore and refurbish the light. It remains an active aid to maritime navigation.

This colorful, tempered glass cutting board is an incredible example of the beauty of the hand-tinted postcard era repurposed into a brilliant piece of functional kitchen art.
