In 1898, the Pilot Boat Columbia was wrecked on the beach in the Sand Hills section of Scituate during the Great Portland Gale. Local residents transformed the hull into a museum of the wreck which attracted visitors for a few years afterwards. Much of the interior is preserved today in the town's Irish Mossing Museum.
